Exploring Miraflor Natural Reserve, Nicaragua

For our last three weeks in Nicaragua, we decided to get away from the beaches and head north to Miraflor Natural Reserve. We took the long bus north towards Esteli, and in the process escaped from all other tourists and crowds.

The bus ride to Esteli was a preview of what was to come, with rolling green hills and a decidedly different landscape. Most of the southern half of the country is tropical and near sea level. But as we climbed up hills and into the mountains, the land around us started to change.

We arrived in Esteli after a 3 hour bus ride to Managua, a bus transfer, and another 2 hour bus ride to our destination. Our goal was to arrange a farmstay in the Miraflor Natural Reserve after hearing about how calm and peaceful the reserve was. Once we were there, we headed towards the Treehugger’s office. Treehuggers runs a hostel, cafe, and tourism office. Most of their proceeds from all three go into funding community driven projects including education, women, youth work, and farming. They’re an all around great company.

We took a bus out to the reserve, and it was jam packed full of people heading back up into the highlands from Esteli. Everyone had big baskets of groceries, supplies from town, and the kids were all happily eating ice cream cones.

Our bus chugged up into high elevation, surrounding us by countryside. Pretty soon, we were dropped off on the side of the small road to a young boy waiting for us. The air already was cooler and smelled cleaner. He beckoned for us to follow, and we started our trek upwards.

Stayed on a farm and this was our "driveway" 😍 #nicaragua #nofilter

We walked along a small dirt trail for a sweaty 20 minutes with all our bags. I would seriously suggest traveling as light as possible for a trip into the Miraflor Natural Reserve. Learn from our mistakes! The road only gets you to a general area, but to get to the actual locations of the farmstays is quite the trek.

When we arrived at our farmstay, we were in awe at how beautiful it was. We walked past a pasture of cows,  through a tunnel of palm trees, and came upon a simple concrete house where we would be staying. Our family greeted us with waves and smiles.

The room was basic, but the surroundings were absolutely gorgeous! The view from the patio was stunning, and created the most perfect atmosphere.

After getting settled in, we asked the family we were staying with for directions to a waterfall located in the Miraflor Natural Reserve. They gave us a very bare bones map, some directions we didn’t quite understand, and we were on our way.

We walked around the Miraflor Natural Reserve all day, taking in the surroundings. Although we never found the waterfall we were after, we had a fantastic time just exploring. If you want to hire a guide, that can be arranged at your farmstay, as well as horses for hire too. As we made our way back up to the farm, we were right in time for sunset.

Our dinner was delicious and made fresh with ingredients right from the farm. We were happily surprised at how delicious the food was, as Nicaragua is not quite known for their food. We enjoyed the sunset while eating dinner, and then laid in the hammocks all night listening to the sounds of Miraflor Natural Reserve. As we went to bed, we could only think about how wonderful the entire day was.

For those wishing to visit the Miraflor Natural Reserve, we highly recommend it. It’s the perfect way to see another side of Nicaragua away from the tourist hot spots in the south. Not to mention the beautiful scenery, the people in the highlands were welcoming and so unbelievably friendly. Any one looking for an adventure, Miraflor Natural Reserve is the perfect place for you.
